At VCYSA, we believe soccer is about more than just the game—it’s about building confidence, decision-making, and resilience in a fun, supportive environment.
We use imagination-based games, short activities, and lots of time with a ball at each child’s feet. Expect fun challenges like Red Light, Green Light, Monster Tag, Follow the Leader, and silly shooting games that keep everyone active. Coaches may even join players on the field to help guide and encourage—but we never take the game away from them.
At this age, soccer is all about fun, movement, and building confidence with the ball at their feet. Our focus is on helping young players fall in love with the game while developing foundational skills in a playful, supportive environment.
😊 Joyful social interaction—“I LOVE soccer!”
🧠 Following simple instructions and building focus
🏃♀️ Motor development through running, balance, and movement
⚽ Introduction to dribbling, kicking, and controlling the ball
🥅 Directional play (understanding which goal to go toward)
✅ Prioritize fun and creativity
✅ Encourage players to explore and make their own decisions
✅ Celebrate effort and progress—no matter how small
🚫 Long lines
🚫 Complicated drills or positions
🚫 Sideline coaching or pressure to “win
We still prioritize fun and lots of time on the ball, but now introduce passing games in pairs, partner challenges, and dynamic team-based activities that get kids moving and thinking. Coaches structure practices with intentional progressions—starting simple and building up to small-sided scrimmages that feel like the real game.
By this stage, players are becoming more aware of the game around them—and that’s when things get really fun. At this level, we begin to introduce teamwork, movement off the ball, and more structured play—all while keeping things playful and pressure-free.
🧍♂️ Teamwork begins—kids learn to play with and support teammates
🧠 Recognizing space, timing, and where the ball is going
🦶 Improved dribbling, passing, and basic striking
⚽ Fun, small-sided games that bring out creativity and confidence
👏 Encouragement to try new things and make decisions on their own
✅ Keep things moving with short, engaging activities
✅ Teach important soccer habits like dribbling with both feet, intentional first touches, and facing the field
✅ Use fun games to build real technical and decision-making skills
🚫 Long lines or long lectures
🚫 Pressure to “perform”
🚫 Standing around waiting for turns
We guide players through more structured practices that introduce both technical skills and simple tactical concepts in fun, easy-to-grasp ways. Players learn how to think the game, not just play it. Training is dynamic and includes warm-ups, skill-building, and small-sided games that mimic real match scenarios.
At this stage, players are starting to think a little more about how and why things happen on the field—and that opens up a whole new level of play! From supporting teammates to learning basic tactics, kids in this age group are building confidence, sharpening their skills, and taking more responsibility both on and off the field.
🤝 Playing as a team and supporting each other on the field
🧠 Beginning tactical awareness—like “Why did I pass here?” or “How can we win the ball back?”
⚽ More advanced dribbling, passing, and shooting with purpose
🧤 Optional opportunities to explore goalkeeping in rotation
🏃♀️ Faster, more fluid movement as their coordination improves
✅ Let kids explore multiple positions and roles
✅ Encourage smart decision-making and independence
✅ Create space for players to grow their love for the game while building strong fundamentals
🚫 Long lectures or complicated formations
🚫 Making mistakes feel like failures
🚫 Repetitive lines, laps, or kids standing around
Sessions focus on building confidence through repetition, decision-making, and small group play. Coaches progress from individual work to group tactics, always ending practice with small-sided games that mirror real match scenarios. Mistakes are encouraged, and progress is celebrated.
At this age, players are starting to truly care about how they play. They’re asking better questions, recognizing patterns in the game, and becoming more driven to improve—and our job is to help nurture that curiosity while keeping soccer fun and rewarding.
⚽ Building real skill in dribbling, passing, shooting, and controlling the ball out of the air
🧠 Thinking tactically—how to defend, keep possession, and make smart plays
🧤 Trying out positions (including goalkeeper!) to find their strengths
🤝 Working together as a team—learning about positioning and shape in games
🏃♂️ Beginning to put speed, coordination, and timing together
✅ Encourage creative decision-making on the field
✅ Provide real tools to help them problem-solve and grow
✅ Focus on making every kid feel seen, capable, and part of the team
🚫 Long lines and boring laps
🚫 Strict formations or shouting instructions all game
🚫 Making players feel like mistakes are failures

Perfect! Rec Soccer is designed for players of all ages and skill levels. Coaches and teammates will help them learn the game in a supportive environment whether they have been playing for years or this is their first time out.
We do our best to honor requests but cannot guarantee placements, teammates, or practice days. When you register there is a place to add specific requests and we will do our best to accommodate. We discourage the formation of "super teams" or keeping the same kids together every single year as we want to create a fair and fun environment for every player in our program. It great for players to play with a variety of different kids.
